Question about mixing joint compound for a smooth finish

I always just scooped it from the bucket until a guy at the supply house in Boise said 'mix it like pancake batter for 90 seconds'. Tried it on a patch last weekend and the difference is wild, no more tiny lumps. Anyone have a favorite paddle mixer they use for this?

What kind of drill were you using for that? That's a serious job for a cordless tool. Sounds like it went out in a blaze of glory.
