Appreciation post: My 'ruined' deck stain job from last fall actually looks better now
Last October, I stained my deck in Charlotte and it looked awful. I used a solid color stain on pressure-treated wood that was only a month old. It went on blotchy and sticky, and I was sure I'd have to sand it all off. Everyone online said to strip it immediately. I left it alone all winter. Now, after a full season of sun and rain, the stain has worn in evenly. The blotches are gone and it has a nice, weathered look that I actually prefer. I think we rush to fix things that just need time. Has anyone else had a finish disaster that fixed itself with patience?

You just got lucky with the weather, most botched jobs just get worse over time.

Hah, you're probably right! My last paint job started peeling after one good rain, looked like a sad lizard shedding its skin. Guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope the sun sticks around. What's the worst repair fail you've seen actually hold up?
