Back in 2012, I was helping my buddy rewire his basement in Denver and learned a hard lesson about junction boxes.

That old Denver basement wiring probably had cloth insulation. That stuff gets brittle and crumbles if you look at it wrong, especially in a dry climate. Makes a simple junction box job a real mess of cracked wire sheathing.

Sounds like the wiring turns into a pile of black dust if you breathe on it too hard. Makes you wonder how the house hasn't burned down yet. Just another day in a century-old home.

Forget the dust, the real scare is finding out the old box wasn't even grounded. Just a hot wire waiting to find a path through the pipes.
