Scraped three layers of paint off a door in Brooklyn only to find the original was latex over oil and now it's peeling again in 2 weeks
I was stripping a 1920s door in my Bed-Stuy rental last Saturday and got down to the bare wood, but now I'm debating if I should sand it all off again and prime with a bonding agent or just try to seal it as-is before repainting, has anyone else hit this exact nightmare with old city doors?

Scraped three layers of paint off a door" and found the original problem - that sounds brutal. But I'd actually say don't sand it all off again, that's just gonna make things worse. Hit it with a good bonding primer like Stix or Cover Stain first, then top coat. Sealing it as-is without the right primer is just asking for the same peeling mess in a few weeks.

Had a similar thing happen with an old window frame last year. @brianm27 you're dead right about the primer, but I learned the hard way that even bonding primer won't stick if there's any chalky residue left behind from the old paint. Wiped the whole thing down with TSP substitute and rinsed it twice before I even touched the primer can. Still took two coats of Cover Stain to get a solid base.
