Serious question, why do people always say to paint before you install?

I was finishing my garage in Portland last year and painted the walls after the shelving was up, which everyone says is wrong. I realized it was actually easier to cut in around the brackets and not worry about drips on new paint. Has anyone else tried doing the painting last and had it work out better?

lane.taylor has a point about the floor... but I've managed to paint myself into a corner by starting in the middle of the room and just working my way out. It's a special skill. The last time I did it, I had to call for help and wait three hours for the paint to dry.
