Finally got my garage door opener to stop making that grinding noise

Man, this was a three-day job that should have been an hour. The opener was making this awful metal-on-metal sound every time it ran. I thought for sure it was the chain drive, so I spent a whole afternoon adjusting the tension, cleaning it, and greasing it. No change. My wife said it sounded like a robot dying. I finally pulled the whole motor unit down from the ceiling to get a better look. Turns out, the plastic gear inside the motor housing had worn down so much it was just spinning against the metal shaft. I ordered a new gear kit online for about $35, and after watching a video three times, I got the old one swapped out. It's quiet as a mouse now. Has anyone else had to rebuild one of these older LiftMaster units?

Pro tip: My garage floor went from slick to safe in about 30 minutes.

I painted the floor with a standard epoxy kit last spring. By this winter, any tiny bit of water or snow melt made it like an ice rink. I finally mixed in a grit additive I got at the hardware store and rolled on a fresh top coat. The difference is night and day, even when it's wet. Anyone have a favorite brand of anti-slip additive that holds up?

PSA: I was over-tightening every single bolt on my project car for years.

I snapped a caliper bracket bolt on my '98 Civic last weekend, and my buddy just stared at me. He said, 'You're using a 3-foot breaker bar like it's a hammer. That's not torque, that's trauma.' I looked it up, and the spec for that bolt was only 65 ft-lbs. I was probably putting over 150 on it. Now I'm renting a torque wrench from the auto parts store and re-checking everything. My brother told me to use a breaker bar on my truck's lug nuts and it saved my knuckles.

I was trying to change a flat on my 2005 F-150 with just the factory tire iron. After five minutes of jumping on it, my buddy Jake walked over and said, 'Dude, go get a 24-inch breaker bar from the auto parts store.' I spent $30 on one, and the nut came off with one easy pull. Update: I thought those magnetic parts trays were a gimmick until my buddy in Tucson swore by them.

He gave me one last month and I've used it every single day since, keeping bolts from rolling under the workbench. Now I'm wondering if I should buy a whole set or if there's a better system out there. What do you guys use to keep small parts organized while you're working?

Hot take: I lost a whole weekend and about $80 in materials trying to build a custom workbench with only pocket holes.

In my experience, they're fine for light stuff, but for a solid bench that can take real weight, you need proper mortise and tenon or at least some beefy bolts, so has anyone else found a good middle-ground method that's strong but not super advanced?

Serious question, why do people always say to paint before you install?

I was finishing my garage in Portland last year and painted the walls after the shelving was up, which everyone says is wrong. I realized it was actually easier to cut in around the brackets and not worry about drips on new paint. Has anyone else tried doing the painting last and had it work out better?
