Rant: carrying a balance doesn't help your score at all

I keep seeing people say you need to carry a balance month to month to build credit. That's wrong. I paid off my $2,800 Chase card in full every month for 3 years and my score hit 780. Has anyone else had a bank tell them this myth?

Bought a $30 calligraphy pen set for my bullet journal headers

The ink bled through every single page of my Leuchtturm1917 and now I have to either start a new notebook or just accept that my spreads look like a crime scene - has anyone else found a pen that actually works with thin paper?

Finally caught my bad habit with air entrainment after a cold pour disaster

Was screeding a 40 yard driveway last winter and had 3 panels surface scale right in front of me, realized I'd been running my mixer too dry for like 5 years. Any other guys here just dump the air entrainer in without checking slump first?

One piece of feedback that made me stop rushing assembly projects

A buddy looked at a bookshelf I built and said 'you're speedrunning Ikea instructions like it's a race nobody wins.' He was right. I was always trying to beat my own time and ended up with crooked shelves. Now I take a breather between each step and actually check my work. Has anyone else gotten a simple comment that changed your whole process?

Tested two bonding methods on this bleach damaged hair yesterday

Had a client come in with hair that was basically cotton candy from too much home bleach. I tried Olaplex on one side and a cheap bonding treatment on the other. The Olaplex side felt noticeably stronger and looked shinier after just one round. Has anyone else seen a big difference between brand name and off brand bond repair?

I finally bought a $300 mortar mixer attachment for my drill

Thought it was a waste of money but after mixing 15 bags of type S by hand last Tuesday my shoulder gave out and now I get it done in half the time with way less pain, anyone else made the jump from hand mixing?

Almost got stranded on the Superior Hiking Trail last month because I trusted my phone GPS over a paper map

I was 4 miles out from the car near Gooseberry Falls when my battery died and I realized the trail split I took was wrong, had to backtrack in the dark for 2 hours because I didn't bring a backup compass - anyone else ever learned this lesson the hard way?

Prompt hack: tried writing fantasy with modern slang versus old timey language

I was stuck on a sword and sorcery prompt last month so I wrote two versions. First one used words like "yo" and "bet" which felt off for a medieval setting. Second version I used simple old phrases like "prithee" and "by my sword" plus I cut any modern references. The second one got way more replies on the feedback thread because it felt authentic. Has anyone else tried playing with the voice to make their fantasy prompts land better?

Why do so many techs skip checking the power supply first?

I've been doing house calls in Phoenix for about 2 years now, and I'd say 8 out of 10 machines brought in for 'not turning on' just have a dead or failing power supply. The other day a guy spent 45 minutes reseating RAM and swapping cables before I checked his PSU with a tester and it was dead on the 12V rail. Am I crazy for thinking a quick PSU test should be step one every time?

I stopped by this tiny place called The Last Word on my way through North Carolina last month. They had a whole shelf of reading group guides with handwritten notes in the margins from past discussions. One copy of a Margaret Atwood novel had a five page argument about the ending scrawled inside the cover. It gave me ten new angles to bring up at my next meeting. Has anyone else found debate material hiding in used books?
