Pro tip: Check out the used bookstore in Asheville for book club debate gold

I stopped by this tiny place called The Last Word on my way through North Carolina last month. They had a whole shelf of reading group guides with handwritten notes in the margins from past discussions. One copy of a Margaret Atwood novel had a five page argument about the ending scrawled inside the cover. It gave me ten new angles to bring up at my next meeting. Has anyone else found debate material hiding in used books?

wait so you're saying you found a five page argument in a used book and that's supposed to be "debate gold"? i mean i get that it's kinda cool to see what randos thought about the ending but like... how serious is your book club actually taking themselves if they need to read stranger's margin notes for new takes on a decades old book? i found a copy of The Road once with someone's grocery list on the back page and i'm pretty sure that didn't make me any smarter at my next meeting

Haha totally @abbyd36, I found a receipt from 1998 in a book once and we spent like half the meeting debating what it said about the author 😂
