Two hours to patch a 3-inch drywall hole - that turned into 8 days

I tried fixing a small hole in my living room ceiling after a plumbing leak, but I didn't realize the old popcorn texture would be impossible to match. Ended up scraping the whole ceiling, retexturing, and painting the entire room because it looked so bad in spots. Has anyone else had a simple patch job snowball into a full room redo like this?

Had a 2 inch screw hole in my bedroom wall turn into me ripping out a whole closet system last summer. I thought I'd just spackle and paint but the paint sheen was slightly off so I painted the whole wall. Then the trim next to it looked yellow compared to the fresh white so I painted that too. Next thing I knew the closet doors looked dated and I was at Home Depot buying new tracks and shelves at 11pm. That cheap little hole ended up costing me like 400 bucks and a weekend I'll never get back.

My buddy did the same thing with a bathroom mirror last year.
