Watching DIY deck builds around here turn into safety hazards

Lately, I've seen a bunch of people in my area trying to save money by building their own decks without checking local codes or using the right hardware. They'll use regular screws instead of lag bolts for the ledger board, and then wonder why it starts pulling away from the house after a heavy rain. It's a real head-shaker because a little research could prevent a total collapse, but everyone's in a rush to finish. Just last week, I drove past a place where the whole thing was sagging on one side, and it made me think about how common this is getting.

Yeah, @nora_chen is right, it's scary to see. But I keep wondering why people skip the basic stuff like checking codes, you know? Like, is it just being too sure of themselves, or maybe they don't even know where to find the rules? I mean, a quick call to the town office could stop someone from building a death trap. It just feels like such a huge risk for saving what, a couple hundred bucks maybe?

Sometimes the people giving the permits don't know the rules either.
