Why does nobody talk about how a bad caulk job at my friend's house in Denver made me switch to backer rod for every gap over a quarter inch?

I saw his bathroom trim caulk crack and pull away in under a year because he filled a huge half-inch gap behind the baseboard, so now I always stuff foam backer rod in first, no matter what the old guys at the hardware store say about 'just using more caulk'.

Used to think backer rod was overkill for DIY stuff. Then I watched the caulk in my own window sill crack and peel after one winter because the gap was too deep. Now I shove that foam rope in anything wider than my pencil, and the caulk actually stays put.

Ever see a caulk job so bad it looked like a dried-up riverbed? My neighbor tried to seal his window trim with just caulk in a huge gap, and it shrank so much you could see daylight again. That kind of mess is exactly why your backer rod idea makes total sense.
