Old timer told me my swing was wrong on a Mississippi River job last spring

I used to think you should run the cutter head at max RPM to chew through clay faster. Guy named Gene with 30 years on the river showed me his logbook where running at 70% speed cut his downtime by almost half because the teeth weren't burning out. I swapped to his way and saved about $200 a week on replacement parts. Anyone else had an old hand bust their assumptions about running the cutter?

Running at 70% speed cut his downtime..." That Gene was dead on. I learned the same lesson running a dredge in Mississippi.
