Rant: That week I swore off pre-mixed joint compound for good
Got stuck on a big basement finish in Springfield last summer, 90 degrees and humid. Boss insisted we use a whole pallet of that pre-mixed mud for speed. By day three, the stuff was setting up in the pan like concrete every 20 minutes. We wasted so much time and material just trying to keep it workable. A guy on the crew finally brought in his own bag of powder and mixed small batches. His walls were done smoother and faster with zero waste. Now I only use the powder, mixing what I need for the day. Anyone else switch back after a bad experience with the pre-mix?

Swear I saw the same thing happen on a job last fall... the pre-mix skinning over in the bucket before lunch. It's not just about waste, it's about control. With the powder, you can tweak the mix for the first coat versus the finish coat, something that slop in a bucket just can't do. Once you get a feel for mixing your own, you'll never go back to that pre-made glop.
