Unpopular opinion: I started using a 12-inch taping knife for my first coat on big ceilings

I was working on a big ceiling in a new build in Bend last month, and my shoulder was killing me from using my usual 10-inch knife. I grabbed a 12-inch knife from my kit on a whim, and it covered more area with each pass, so I didn't have to move my arm as much. It made the whole job way faster and saved my shoulder a lot of strain. Anyone else try a bigger knife for the first coat on ceilings?

Honestly that part about your shoulder not hurting as much makes total sense. I read a forum post a while back where a guy said the same thing, that a bigger knife for the first coat on a ceiling changed everything for him. He said it was less about speed and more about not wrecking your body by the end of the day. Tbh I was skeptical but after trying it myself on a big flat section, I get it. You just get into a better rhythm with fewer strokes. It feels way less like a fight.

But have you tried a smaller knife for more control?
