My tour of that ancient library's lift system was a total eye-opener

The hoistway had original brass guides from the 1920s, but the safety edges were basically non-existent. I get preserving history, but letting tourists ride that thing is straight up irresponsible. If my crew saw that back home, we'd red-tag it in a heartbeat. Traveling really shows you how lax some places are with basic safety.

Straight up irresponsible is right. I notice this pattern with a lot of historic spots that value old looks over basic safety. You just get used to it until something reminds you how sketchy it really is.

But if they make everything safe, you lose the old feel. A bit of sketchiness is part of the experience, lol.

So where do you draw the line, exactly? Is it when the handrail is so loose it comes off in your hand, or when the stairs are so worn you actually slip? Calling basic hazards "character" feels like a cheap excuse for not fixing things that could really hurt someone.

People ride way worse stuff every day and survive.
