I was sure those 'no dig' garden beds were just a lazy trend.

My first attempt with cardboard and compost in the backyard last spring looked like a total mess, but the soil underneath was soft and full of worms by fall. Has anyone else been surprised by a method they initially wrote off?

But what if that soft soil just means more slugs eating your plants?

Remember thinking the same thing about lasagna gardening. Tried it on a whim with newspaper and grass clippings, expecting a weedy disaster. That patch now grows the best tomatoes in my whole yard, and I barely had to water it all summer. What finally convinced you to stick with it?
