Pro tip: I tried to fix a leaky faucet in a rental unit myself last month and ended up causing $500 in water damage.

Honestly, I thought watching a few YouTube videos was enough, but I didn't shut off the main water line first, and now I know to always call a licensed plumber for anything beyond a washer replacement.

My uncle in Florida fixed his own water heater after one video and saved over a thousand bucks. Plumbers charge a fortune just to show up. That five hundred in damage is a learning cost, but now you know about the main shutoff. Next time you'll get it right and keep that money in your pocket. Why pay someone for a simple job you can learn to do yourself?

Hold up, your uncle fixed a water heater after watching one video? That's either the most basic water heater in history or your uncle is secretly a plumber. Those things can be seriously dangerous if you mess with the gas or pressure wrong. Glad it worked out for him, but telling everyone it's a simple job feels like a great way to flood your basement or worse. Some stuff is worth paying a pro to not have your house blow up.

What about the risk of gas leaks or flooding, verac40?
