My Spanish app plan was a flop until I tried talking

I thought using a Spanish app every day would make me fluent in months. But after a while, I could only recall words, not use them in conversation. My cousin suggested a language exchange site, so I tried talking to native speakers. At first, it was rough with lots of mistakes and confusion. However, after several chats, I began to grasp how sentences flow naturally. Now I focus on real conversations instead of solo app time. This shift helped me pick up the skill of actual communication, and it's much more effective.

After several chats, how did you deal with times you got stuck searching for words?

Honestly, did you ever read about using filler words to buy time? I heard on a podcast that even saying the Spanish version of "um" or "well" gives your brain a second to find the word. I tried just saying "pues" or "este" when I blank, and it makes the whole thing feel less awkward. It keeps the chat going instead of just going silent.

Oh, talking about getting stuck, I once tried to order food in Spanish and totally blanked on the word for 'fork'. Ended up miming it like a crazy person, lol. The waiter was so confused but we got there in the end. It's those messy moments that actually stick in your memory and help you learn. Now I just laugh it off and use whatever words I can think of, even if they're wrong.
