Can we talk about trying to make a linen jumpsuit from a vintage pattern?

I followed the 1970s McCall's 9876 pattern exactly, but the fabric just would not hold the shape for the wide legs. It looked like a deflated balloon after one wash. Anyone have a trick for giving linen some structure without making it stiff?

Maybe try a fusible interfacing tape just along the seam lines. It adds a hidden bit of support to the seams themselves without coating the whole fabric. That can keep the shape from going totally limp.

But that tape can make the seams too stiff and weird, almost like cardboard. Sometimes letting the fabric move naturally is better.

Yeah, that hidden tape trick works best on collars and cuffs where you want some structure but not the whole piece stiff.
