A dog's great escape turned me into a self-closing gate fan

I believed self-closing gates were just for show, not for real work. But when a client's dog bolted out an open gate I forgot to latch, and I had to chase it through three backyards, I changed my tune. What's a fence part you once called useless before a crazy incident changed your mind?

I mean, that escape story really shows how necessary those gates are. @hugos67 talking about latches is so true, it takes a scary moment to see their worth.
