Hot take: My kombucha SCOBY hotel overflowed when friends were over.

Now I use a bigger jar and leave more headspace so it doesn't bubble over on guests.

Learned that lesson after my hotel erupted during a book club meeting. A glob of SCOBY ended up in someone's purse. They found it three days later, confused by the sour smell. I had to explain it wasn't a new leather conditioner. Now my jars have more empty space than my social calendar.

Wow, that might be the best argument for keeping fermenting things sealed tight I've ever heard. Imagining someone trying to figure out that sour smell getting worse by the hour is honestly kind of funny. At least you didn't have to explain a new "living" leather conditioner that grows a second skin. Your jars being that empty is probably for the best, gives the next batch less chance to go on a field trip.

What faithc17 went through shows how these messes can turn into weird social puzzles. Like, now her friend probably sniffs every bag before using it, which is a whole new level of paranoia. Honestly, the real cost isn't the lost SCOBY, it's the trust you have to rebuild after explaining a living thing invaded someone's stuff.
