Just found out my cast iron pan doesn't need soap every time

I was scrubbing my Lodge skillet with dish soap after every use for like 18 months. Then a friend in Portland told me to just rinse it with hot water and a scrub brush instead. The eggs I cooked this morning slid right off. Has anyone else been over-washing their pans this whole time?

Read somewhere that the old factory seasoning on those skillets is basically wax you're scrubbing off.

Yeah I did the exact same thing for like a year. Got my first cast iron pan and treated it like it was made of glass or something. Scrubbed it with soap and a sponge every single time. Then I talked to this old guy at a diner who told me to just boil some water in it and scrape it with a metal spatula. Changed my whole world honestly. It takes a minute to get used to not being so aggressive with them but once you do they work so much better. Your Portland friend did you a solid.
