Took me 10 years to realize I was sharpening my knives wrong the whole time
I always used a pull-through sharpener because it was quick and easy. Then my buddy let me try his water stone last weekend and I actually saw the burr form for the first time. Has anyone else gone through that switch and felt dumb about it later?

Saw a guy online say that pull-through sharpeners basically just rip the edge off instead of actually sharpening it. Made me feel pretty stupid when I switched to stones too.

Oh man, I gotta push back on that one hard! I used a pull-through sharpener on my daily chef knife for like three years straight and that thing sliced through tomatoes like butter right up until I dropped it and chipped the tip. Those cheap plastic ones with carbide blades? Yeah those tear metal off like crazy. But the nicer ones with ceramic rods and diamond wheels actually work fine for most people. I keep one in my camping bag and it beats trying to get an angle right on a rock in the woods. Stones are better for sure if you know what you're doing, but acting like pull-throughs only destroy blades is overblown. They got their place.
