Had to choose between a $55k salary with no benefits and a $42k government job with a pension last month
I took the government job after realizing the private offer would have cost me $380 a month just for basic health insurance, and now I'm actually sleeping better knowing I won't be fired on a whim, has anyone else turned down more money for stability?

Double down on that trade tbh. Peace of mind is way cheaper than therapy bills from stressing over some corporate job that sees you as a number anyway.
