My chat with a small claims clerk changed how I see court costs
I had to file a small dispute over a $350 deposit my old landlord wouldn't return. The clerk at the Scarborough courthouse told me the filing fee was actually $150 and I could add it to my claim. She said most people don't realize they can do that, so they walk away from fair fights. Has anyone else tacked on filing fees to their claim here in the GTA?

...and that clerk did you a real solid. Most folks don't realize you can add the filing fee to what you're asking for. I've seen too many people give up on a hundred dollar claim because they thought the court costs would eat it all up. Good on her for telling you that, it's the kind of info that makes the system work for regular people.
