The week I showed a house to 14 couples and 12 of them wanted the same closet

Last month I had this listing in a 1950s ranch in Austin, nothing special. But every single person who walked through kept talking about this one walk-in closet off the master bedroom. It was maybe 6x8 feet with some custom shelving. I had back to back showings for 5 days straight and 12 out of 14 couples said the closet was their favorite part of the house. One guy even said he'd buy it just for that closet. Has anyone else had a random feature totally sell a house?

Oh come on, I have to push back on this one. People getting all worked up over a closet just tells me how far we've fallen in what we look for in a house. A 6x8 closet with some shelves? That's not exactly the Pantheon. I've seen buyers lose their minds over a built-in bookshelf or a kitchen island with a sink and then completely ignore that the foundation is cracking or the roof is 20 years old. If 12 out of 14 couples picked that closet as the best thing about the house, it sounds like the rest of the place was pretty useless. You're telling me no one noticed the bathrooms or the yard or the layout? That kind of tunnel vision is exactly how people end up buying a house with bad bones because they fell in love with a mudroom.

Man, that is WILD but also I totally get it. People get fixated on the STRANGEST things sometimes. I've seen it happen where a house sits forever and then one person loses their mind over a weird little nook or a specific light fixture. It's like that one closet just hit EVERYONE right in the daydream of having a tidy, organized space. Must have been a trip to watch couple after couple walk in and light up over shelving. That guy ready to buy the house just for the closet, that's a whole other level of commitment right there.
