My push pull legs split blew up on me mid set at the gym last Tuesday
I was on my third set of barbell rows during my pull day at Planet Fitness on Elm Street. Right after my second rep, my left grip just gave out and the bar tipped sideways. Landed on the safety bars, thank god. Turns out my grip was toast from doing deadlifts first. I always did them at the end of pull day but I switched the order around to get it over with. Ended up having to cut my rows short and just do lat pulldowns instead. Should I just go back to an upper lower split where I can put deadlifts on their own day, or is there a smarter way to sequence a PPL without wrecking your grip? Has anyone else had this happen?

Oh man, I feel your pain. I had the exact same thing happen with my grip on deadlift day once. What finally worked for me was sequencing it like deadlifts first, then rows, and swapping my row grip to mixed grip on the last set.

Wait, you had the bar tip sideways on you? That exact thing happened to me last month at my local Gold's Gym. I was doing rows on my pull day after deadlifts and my left hand just gave out on the fourth rep. Landed hard on the safety pins, scared the crap out of me. I switched my grip to straps for rows ever since because regular grip just couldn't handle the load after pulling 405 on deadlifts. For sequencing, what fixed it for me was putting deadlifts first always, then switching to a mixed grip on rows when my grip started slipping. Way better than trying to rearrange the whole split.
