Old timer told me to stop forcing the bit and let the drill do the work

Guy at the shop saw me muscling through a 3/4 inch spade bit in pine. He said 'you're fighting the wood, let the tool spin.' Changed my whole approach right there. Has anyone else had a simple tip from someone that just clicked?

That "let the tool do the work" bit is good but here's the thing nobody says out loud - sometimes you gotta match the tool to the job. That pine you were drilling? That spade bit was probably dull as hell. I've seen guys burn out chisels on softwood because they think sharp tools only matter for hardwoods. You can let the drill spin all you want but if the bit's dull you're just rubbing wood instead of cutting it. Check your bit's edge before you blame your technique next time.

Honestly, has nobody thought about the speed setting on their drill? That old timer's advice about letting the tool work only works if you're spinning at the right RPM for the bit size. A 3/4 inch spade bit in pine needs to be cranked down slow, not hammered at full throttle. Most guys I see just throw their drill in high gear and wonder why it's burning up. Between that and a sharp bit like Rivera said, you're golden.
