Unpopular opinion that guy at the hardware store was actually right about using WD-40 on my seized miter saw arbor

Told me to soak it overnight and tap it with a brass punch, I figured he was just blowing smoke but after 12 hours that thing spun free no problem. Has anyone else had an old timer's hack actually work way better than you expected?

Same thing happened with my uncle's old table saw. He had this rusted locking pin that wouldn't budge, so he told me to soak it in Coke overnight. I figured he was pulling my leg but I was desperate, so I poured a two liter into a coffee can and dropped the pin in there. Next morning that rust was basically gone and the pin slid right out like it was brand new. Now I keep a can of Coke in the garage for exactly that purpose, though I still don't drink the stuff.

Blew my mind when I read you dropped it in Coke. I always heard about that trick but figured it was just an old wives' tale. That's wild that it actually ate away the rust like that. Guess I gotta start keeping a two liter in the garage now too, even though I hate the stuff. Never would have believed it if I hadn't seen someone actually try it.
