My brother said to just start my novel's second draft, but that was wrong.

He told me to 'just write' last month, but I got stuck after three pages because I hadn't outlined the new plot points. Has anyone else found they need a solid plan before tackling a rewrite?

Used to believe in just diving in head first... thought planning was for people who were scared to write. Then I tried rewriting a short story without a new outline and it was a total mess, pages of stuff that went nowhere. Now I need at least a basic list of what changes before I touch a single sentence. That "just write" advice can really set you up to fail on a second draft.
