My plaster repair looked great until I tried the premix vs. the traditional hot mud mix
I was patching a hole in my living room wall off Central Ave and used the pre-mixed joint compound from the big box store because it was easy. After three days it cracked right along the edge of the patch, so I scraped it out and mixed up some hot mud myself following an old YouTube video. Has anyone else had premix fail on them in our dry climate here, or did I just get a bad bucket?

Has your buddy ever tried the pre-mix stuff here? My friend Mike used it to fix a hole in his garage and it cracked in two days flat, he was so annoyed he switched to hot mud and never looked back. Something about our dry air just seems to suck all the moisture out of that bucket mud way too fast.

My buddy Dave had the same thing happen with a pre-mix bucket he got from the big box store back in January. He patched a ceiling crack in his kitchen and it was like the stuff just gave up after 48 hours, little hairline cracks all over. He said it felt like the bucket was still good when he opened it, but once it hit the air in his house it just fell apart. Now he swears by the hot mud in the paper bag, says it sets up way more solid for stuff like that. I think it's just the way our climate hits those premixes, they don't hold up like they should.
