Put a $6 wax ring on my toilet instead of calling the guy who wanted $180, and now I'm mad at myself
My toilet started leaking at the base about two weeks ago, just a little water seeping out onto the tile in the hall bath. I called a plumber I've used before and he quoted me $180 to come out, pull the toilet, and reset it with a new ring. Something in my gut said that number felt high for a job I'd watched my uncle do in his own house years back. So I looked it up and the whole deal is: shut off the water, drain the tank, unbolt the base, lift it up, scrape off the old wax, drop a new ring on the flange, set it back down. The ring itself cost me $6 at the hardware store on Montgomery. Only tricky part was getting the old bolts loose, one was rusted and I had to hit it with some penetrating oil and wait. Took me maybe an hour total, including the trip to the store, and the leak is gone. What gets me is I've been paying people for stuff like this for years without even thinking about it. Anyone else had a small fix turn into a bigger lesson about what you can actually do yourself?
Man, that sinking feeling when you realize you've been handing over cash for stuff you could've done in an hour. Good on you for finally trying it yourself.
