Vent: My dad saw my new 'smart' thermostat and just shook his head
He said, 'Kid, I kept that old Honeywell round dial in your grandma's house for 40 years with a screwdriver and a $5 mercury switch.' It hit different because my fancy unit just bricked itself after a power flicker last month. Anyone else have an old-school fix that's more reliable than the new tech?

Okay but is it really that big of a deal? Those old thermostats were simple but they also wasted a ton of energy. The new ones can actually save money, even if they break sometimes. Stuff just breaks, that's how it goes with anything. Maybe the real problem is making things that are too hard to fix yourself.

Yeah that hits close to home. I mean my dad has the same kind of stories and it's hard to argue when your fancy gadget just stops working for no good reason. There's something about stuff you can actually fix with basic tools that feels more solid, even if it's not as smart. Makes you wonder what we're really trading for all this convenience.
