A friend told me I always steer conversations back to myself and it stung at first

Last month my buddy Dave pointed out that whenever he talks about his day, I jump in with a similar story about myself instead of just listening. At first I got defensive, but after thinking on it I realized he was right and I was doing it without noticing. How do you catch yourself before hijacking a conversation and actually just let the other person talk?

I mean, you could argue that swapping stories is just how people actually build rapport and connect... Like, if I tell you about my rough day at work and you tell me about yours, that's not hijacking, that's showing you get it. The whole "just listen without saying anything" thing feels a bit forced and unnatural. Maybe Dave was just having a bad day and took it the wrong way, you know?

Wait, didn't Dave just vent about a different thing first though?
