The week my best friend forgot my birthday and I realized something

My birthday was on a Tuesday, and my friend of eight years didn't call or text. I waited three days before I finally sent a casual message, and she replied 'Oh no, my calendar alert didn't pop up!' (which felt like a robot excuse). That whole week, I kept thinking about how we used to plan surprise parties for each other. Has anyone else had a long friendship just sort of fade because of small stuff like this?

That "robot excuse" about the calendar alert really says it all. I read something once about how friendships don't usually end with a big fight, they just starve from a lack of small kindnesses. Forgetting a birthday is one thing, but it's the not making up for it that hurts. It's not calling the next day, or sending a card late, or even just saying how bad you feel. You're right, it's the small stuff that adds up until you realize you're the only one still trying.

Wait, she didn't even try to call you the next day?
