That AI demo at the trade show made me rethink my field notes
Last month I was at a small business expo in Columbus and stopped at a booth where a guy was showing off an AI tool that transcribes voice memos into organized job logs. I run a pest control company, and I've got years of scribbled notes about client properties, treatment dates, and weird critter behavior. He let me try it with a fake call I recorded, and it caught every detail, even the slang I use like 'skitter holes' and 'hot spots'. It got me wondering how much time I'd save if I automated my daily paperwork, but I'm also nervous about relying on it for stuff I need to remember exactly. Has anyone else tried using AI for field records, and did it actually stick or did you go back to paper?

The 'skitter holes' part got me. A buddy of mine who does wildlife removal tried one of those voice memo apps last summer. He was all in for about two weeks, feeding it notes after every crawlspace job. Then one day he went to pull up a record for a repeat customer and the thing had filed his note about raccoon droppings under a completely different property, some house he'd never even been to. He spent an hour untangling it, gave up, and went straight back to his spiral notebook. He still uses the app for grocery lists though, go figure.
