My local anime club keeps calling 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' a straight-up mecha show

We had a whole argument last Thursday at the cafe meetup because they treat it like just another robot fight series, but that misses the point of the psychological stuff and the angels. I had to pull up that scene from episode 16 where Shinji just loses it to prove my point. Does anyone else get tired of people oversimplifying shows like that?

Saw a good take online that said calling Evangelion a mecha show is like calling a car crash a fender bender. Right there with you and jakem98 on the psychological stuff being the whole point.

Remember when they spend a whole episode just on Shinji's messed up inner thoughts, like in the hospital with Kaworu? How do your club members explain that away as just a robot show?
