TIL I was pausing anime wrong for 15 years

I always hit pause during the dialogue and then missed half the background jokes because the subtitles would vanish after 2 seconds. Last month I watched Steins;Gate with a friend who kept pausing on establishing shots, and I finally got why people rewatch that show 3 times. Turns out the real detail is in the freeze frames, not the talking heads. Anyone else pause mid-scene to read background text or am I late to this?
