Stopped by the new hangar at the regional airport in Billings and saw something that made me shake my head.

They had a whole row of Cessna 172s with the cowlings off, and every single one had the same oil filter installed backwards. I asked the lead guy about it and he just shrugged and said 'it seals either way'. Has anyone else run into shops cutting corners like this on basic stuff?

The amount of people who skip basic error reading is wild

Was there a point where it just started making sense? For me, it was getting the same type of error over and over until I had to learn its pattern. Like @davis.diana said, one error can make it click, but for me it was more about building a list in my head of what common ones mean. A "ReferenceError" means it can't find a thing, a "TypeError" means it found the thing but you're using it wrong. Once you have that basic decoder ring, the details in the message start to actually help instead of just looking like noise. It turns from a scary wall of text into a simple checklist.

Serious question, my old cross-peen hammer handle split right at the eye yesterday during a heavy forging session.

Straight grain the whole way? That sounds nice but it's not the whole story. I've had plenty of hickory handles with some runout on the sides that have lasted for years, @christopherwilson. The water trick shows you the pattern, but it doesn't tell you about the wood's toughness. For a quick fix, I'll grab almost any decent piece of ash I have lying around before I hunt for a perfect board. Sometimes a serviceable handle now is better than a perfect one next week.
