Warning: I saw three people in my office this month try to fix a printer jam by just hitting the side of it.
I finally told our new intern, after she nearly broke the feed rollers, that you have to follow the service manual's diagram and pull the stuck paper straight out in the direction of the paper path, not just yank on whatever you see.

Respectfully, the service manual is a nice idea in theory. My office printer is a decade old and the diagrams look like cave paintings. A firm but careful whack on the side has un-stuck more jams than I can count. Sometimes you just need to jostle the gears loose before you can even see what to pull.
