PSA: I was cleaning pottery shards wrong for like six months

I was using a stiff nylon brush on everything from a dig site near Tucson, thinking I was being careful. Then a visiting professor saw me and said, 'You're scrubbing the residue off, that's the data.' I realized I'd basically been washing away the very stuff that could tell us what the pots were used for. Has anyone else had a 'facepalm' moment with a basic field technique?
