A 12 year old at my bus stop made me rethink how I answer questions
Last Thursday, this kid named Marcus asked me why I always say 'it depends' when he asks about stuff like whether pineapple belongs on pizza or if aliens are real. He said adults use that phrase to avoid actually thinking, and honestly that stung because he was kind of right. Do you ever catch yourself hedging answers just to sound neutral, and does that actually help anyone get a real answer?

Kids like Marcus are sharp, but that doesn't mean he's fully right. Saying "it depends" isn't always dodging, sometimes the real answer IS that it depends, like with pineapple on pizza. If I just say yes or no to aliens, I'm not giving him the full picture, I'm just picking a side to sound cool. The trick is to follow it up with why it depends, that's where the actual thinking happens. He might be onto something about lazy adults, but a blanket "depends" can be a honest answer if you're willing to explain yourself.
