A customer in Denver once told me 'the quiet ones are always listening' while I was fixing his AC.
He said it out of the blue while I was checking the condenser, and now I think about it every time I'm in a silent room with someone... anyone else have a random line that just stuck?

That line would get stuck in my head too. Did he seem like he was joking, or was it more of a serious, heavy kind of statement? The tone would change the whole memory for me.

Reminds me of my uncle pointing at a crack in his driveway last summer. He just said "that's been there longer than you've been alive" in this totally flat voice, like he was reading a weather report. It wasn't funny or sad, just a fact, but now I always notice that crack when I visit.

Honestly it's the weird offhand comments that stick with you, right? My grandpa once said something similar about the trees in his yard out of nowhere. It wasn't a joke but it wasn't super heavy either, just this quiet fact. Now I can't look at an old oak without hearing his voice. The tone just gets baked into the whole thing forever.
