Found a $5 thrift store jacket that saved me $200 on a camping trip last weekend

Was up near Lake Tahoe last Saturday and the temp dropped way faster than I expected. I had this old thin hoodie and was freezing my butt off. My buddy handed me this puffy jacket he picked up at Goodwill for 5 bucks and it worked better than my North Face one I left at home. Now I'm wondering if I should just hunt for more gear at thrift stores instead of dropping big money. Anyone else find solid outdoor stuff secondhand that held up?

Buddy of mine found a Patagonia fleece at a garage sale for three bucks last fall. Took it up to Yosemite in November and wore it every single day under his shell. Thing kept him warm through rain and wind no problem. He still uses it two years later and it barely shows any wear. So yeah, you can definitely find quality outdoor stuff secondhand if you're patient and check the tags. Your mileage may vary on what's out there but it's worth a look for sure.

Read somewhere you can actually tell the year from the tags. Neat hack.
