I think the 'before and after' of working from home is way overblown

I mean everyone talks about how things completely transformed after COVID hit in early 2020, but for me it's been a slower shift. I work in customer support for a company in Phoenix, and the biggest change I've noticed is just how much less casual chat I get with coworkers. Before March 2020, I'd spend like 15 minutes a day shooting the breeze with the guy two cubicles over. Now I'm lucky if I get a quick "lol" in Slack once a week. Everyone says flexibility is better, but nobody mentions how much quieter your day gets. Is that just me or do other people feel like the tradeoff for home time is losing those random human moments that made the day go faster?

Yeah the "lol in Slack once a week" part really hits because everything feels so scripted now, like real chat is fading everywhere.

Slack's been around since 2013, it's not exactly new. People were probably saying the same thing about AIM back in the day.
