I finally gave in and tried stacking my Jupiter shots
Always thought it was too much work for a blurry planet. Stacked 200 frames from a clear night in March and the detail was shockingly clear, even with my old 8-inch scope. Anyone have a favorite free stacking program they'd recommend over the one I used?
Oh man, I know that feeling! I use Registax for stacking, it's free and kind of clunky but man, it really pulls out the details once you get the hang of it. Totally worth the hassle.
My buddy Kyle spent three hours on a Registax stack of Jupiter last month. He had 2000 frames and followed a YouTube tutorial step by step. The first result looked like a blurry potato with a red dot. He almost deleted the whole thing and gave up. Then he watched a different tutorial that showed the wavelet slider trick and it changed everything. Now he's got a framed print of it on his wall.
