A painter told me my clear coat was too thick and it saved a job

He said, 'You're laying it on like syrup, it'll orange peel every time,' so I switched to three lighter coats with a Sata 5000. Anyone else get a piece of advice that fixed a problem you didn't even know you had?

That "orange peel every time" line is interesting. I've actually had the opposite experience in my booth. A really wet, heavy final coat can sometimes level out better for me if the booth temp is right. Three light coats sounds like a lot of extra work and a chance for dust nibs. Sometimes that thick syrup flow is what you need for a deep gloss.

Depends on the paint and the gun setup honestly. A heavy coat can definitely work but it's a gamble with runs if your technique isn't perfect. I've seen both methods fail spectacularly for different reasons.
