Just realized I've been over-torquing lug nuts for a decade after a customer's offhand comment.
A retired machinist in for an oil change yesterday said 'you know, that click you hear is the wrench yielding, not the bolt,' and I've been thinking about it all morning.

That line about the wrench yielding really got me. I always thought that click was the final say, like a hard stop. Now I'm picturing the actual metal giving way a tiny bit every time, and it makes total sense. Guess I'll be reading up on torque specs this weekend.

Always figured that click was the goal. Makes you wonder what else we get wrong by just following the sound.
