Finally got my dad to stop asking for 'small loans' after a year of awkward talks

It started with him needing $50 for gas last spring and turned into a regular thing... I felt guilty saying no. I finally sat him down in June and said I could only help with a real plan, like a budget. It took three more chats over the summer, but he hasn't asked since August. Has anyone else had to set a hard line with a parent about money?

Gas money turning into a regular thing is exactly how it started with my uncle. I can't believe it took three more chats after that first big talk, that must have been so draining. Good for you for sticking to your plan and not just giving in. It's really hard to change that dynamic once it's started.

My cousin borrowed my car for a weekend trip to Asheville and returned it with an empty tank. That was five years ago, and he still "forgets" his wallet when we go out to eat. You're right, @christopherwilson, once that pattern starts it's like trying to stop a rolling boulder.
