My uncle kept asking for loans until I tried a new script

He asked for $300 last month to fix his car, which was the fourth time this year. I wrote down exactly what to say before I called him, something like 'I can't lend money anymore, but I can help you look at your budget on Saturday.' Sticking to the script felt weird, but it worked. Has anyone else had to set a hard money rule with a family member?

Ever read that book about setting boundaries? It said scripts feel weird because we're not used to protecting our own money. @verac40, it becomes a big deal when "no" gets ignored every single time. A script stops the back and forth before it starts. Your uncle might need help, but your bank account isn't a charity.

Is it really that big a deal to just say no without a whole script? I mean, it's your uncle, not a bill collector. Maybe he just needed help and you made it into a whole thing.
